Excessive Exposure Stimulates Epicormic Branching in Young Northern Hardwoods

ثبت نشده
چکیده

1 Sudden and excessive exposure of northern hardwood trees often causes growth responses that degrade tree quality, injuries that lead to tree deterioration, or both. The most sensitive and visible tree reaction to increased exposure is the formation of epicormic branches. Such branches may arise along the tree bole from either dormant or adventitious buds in response to some physiological stimulus. Often, but not necessarily always, they are associated with a decline in tree vigor. If they persist,

Epicormic Branches and Lumber Grade of Bottomland Oak

Epicormic branches can be a serious problem in management of hardwood forests for high-quality sawtimber production. In one study in central Alabama, defects caused by epicormic branches that developed following a partial cutting resulted in a 13 percent reduction in the value of willow oak lumber. Production of epicormic branches along the boles of hardwood trees is affected by species, stress...

Logging Damage to Residual Trees Following Partial Cutting in a Green Ash-Sugarberry Stand in the Mississippi Delta

Partial cutting in bottomland hardwoods to control stand density and species composition sometimes results in logging damage to the lower bole and/or roots of residual trees. If severe, logging damage may lead to a decline in tree vigor, which may subsequently stimulate the production of epicormic branches, causing a decrease in bole quality and an eventual loss in value of the stand. To invest...

Epicormic branches: a growth indicator for the tropical forest tree, Dicorynia guianensis Amshoff (Caesalpiniaceae).

Architectural analyses of temperate tree species using a chronological approach suggest that the expression of epicormic branches is closely related to low growth rates in the axes that make up the branching system. Therefore, sole consideration of epicormic criteria may be sufficient to identify trees with low secondary growth levels or with both low primary and secondary growth levels. In a t...

Epicormic Branching in Red Oak Crop Trees Five Years after Thinning

INTRODUCTION Epicormic branches are shoots arising spontaneously from adventitious or dormant buds on stems or branches of woody plants, often following exposure to increased light levels or fire (Helms 1998). Epicormic branches are considered defects on tree boles because they result in undesirable knots on trees, reducing the monetary value of logs and lumber (Stubbs 1986). U.S. Department of...

Third-year Growth and Bole Quality Responses T0 Thinning in a Red Oak-sweetgum Stand on a Minor Streambottom Site in West-central Alabama’

Four thinning treatments were applied to a red oak-sweetgum (Quercus spp.-Liquidambar styraciha L.) stand on a minor streambottom site in west-central Alabama in 1994: (1) unthinned control; (2) light thinning to 70-75 percent residual stocking; (3) heavy thinning to 50-55 percent residual stocking; and (4) B-line thinning to desirable residual stocking for bottomland hardwoods, as recommended ...
